Starting your Denver Law Firm – Whats in A Name?
Posted by hawkeye11 in Denver Attorney, denver law firm, naming your denver law firm on August 13th, 2009
By: Nick Hantge

When I started my Denver law firm I was confronted with many choices. What kind of law will I practice? Where will I practice? Who do I want for clients? What kind of fees will I charge? It wasn’t until I actually got into the planning stages of the law firm that I began to see these questions as more big picture, firm philosophy type of questions. These type of questions may never be fully answered because they are not static.
One big picture question that is static and that can have a profound effect on the success of your firm is its name. What’s in a name? A lot if you think about it. Think about your own name for starters. What if you had been named something different? What if you were a boy and had been given a girls name? What if you were born in a particular religion and were given a name not associated with that religion? Have you ever been to a place where for some reason your name was looked down upon? These same types of feelings can be encountered with your Denver law firm name.
The great thing about starting a Denver law firm is that you get to think about this and plan ahead. If you are starting a law firm and are reading this article, you are probably either fairly young, fairly technologically proficient, or both. If you are, then you can probably see that the face and structure of the practice of law are shifting gradually beneath everyone’s feet. Competition is fierce, and image is everything. And guess what, one of the first things people will learn about you, something they will probably use to form an opinion about you before they even meet you, is your firm name.
When naming your law firm there are some things you should think about to make sure you are maximizing that first impression. First, don’t use your name. Second, it should be easy to remember. And finally, it should make people feel and think the way you want them to feel and think about your law firm. Although this may seem easy, when you actually try to do it, I think you’ll find it is a pretty tough exercise.
Some you are probably thinking, “why not use your name? Everyone else does.” That is precisely why. Although people have different goals, if you are starting a Denver law firm, one of those goals is probably to make money practicing law. You make money by having people sign up for your services. People sign up for your services when they know who you are. Why blend in with everyone else when you can set yourself apart? Not only does not using your name allow you to present an image in prospective client’s minds, it allows you to build the brand you want. A great example of this is Valorem Law Group. If you look at their website a central theme is discarding the billable hour to provide clients value for what they are being paid. If you don’t already know, valorem is latin for value (loosely). Do you see the jump start you can get on the competition with a good name?
Second, easy to remember. This is practical for obvious reasons. If people refer your services to friends or colleagues, what is easier to remember, Valorem Law Group or Smith, Sands, Zaremba, Charles, Flippy and Jagermeister? Make your name easy to remember and you make it easier to get business – a key when starting a law firm.
Finally, the brand. When you start your own Denver law firm you start out as the brand. At all times you are promoting your practice, you are what your practice stands for. But before anyone knows what you are all about, you can start them down the right track with a great name that represents the firm philosophy. A strong, powerful, confident name can make the difference in someone choosing to call you. It can also mask your size. “The law firm of Joe Shmoe” implies that you are a small firm. Like it or not many people associate small firm size with poor performance or cheap services. Look bigger than you are immediately by having a firm name that connotes structure, organization, and numbers.
Remember, when naming your law firm, there is more to it than sticking your name before or after law firm. Think about what you want to stand for, find a name that fits that description, and use that to begin building a great law practice.

Immigration law in the United States can be complicated. The stakes are very high to all those involved, and the complexity of such cases can seem overwhelming at times. It is important to have an experienced Denver immigration lawyer on your side.
There are numerous forms to complete, multiple agencies to deal with, and legal filings that must be made on your behalf. Also consider the fact that there may be a language barrier to overcome as well. There are many Denver immigration attorneys that specialize in providing multilingual services. This point in and of itself can bring great comfort to those seeking the expertise of a Denver immigration attorney.
To demonstrate just how obfuscated the immigration process is, consider this; the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has reorganized three times in the last decade. A byproduct of this volatility is that often times government officials are unclear with regard to the immigration procedures to be followed.
An excellent Denver immigration attorney will shepherd you through the entire process, roadblocks, hurdles and all. Immigration attorneys have current and relevant procedural knowledge, and will know what obstacles to anticipate. They will also know how to deal with them expeditiously, offering you a clear and concise explanation of each step, in your native language if necessary.

Immigrating into the United States may be among the most important milestones in your life. Be sure to have an experienced Denver immigration attorney to assist you through the process.
Finding a Denver Attorney

Life in Denver can come at you fast. One moment everything is running smoothly, then suddenly everything turns upside down and you realize you need a good Denver attorney. It may be a lawsuit, it may be a divorce, or it may even be a matter of personal injury. Whatever your legal situation, finding a good denver lawyer from the many Denver, CO attorneys available is essential to winning your case.
The first thing you need to do is decide what type of attorney you need. Are you filing a personal injury claim? Get a personal injury lawyer. You don’t want a divorce lawyer handling your personal injury case.
You can search in the phone book for a Denver attorney. You are guaranteed to find a ton of them. Some will have giant ads, while others merely have a name and number. The ads may or may not be a representation of their skill. You will want to call those with only a number as well as those with the ads. Sometimes a smaller attorney who markets through word of mouth is the best attorney.
A person must be licensed to practice law. Because of this license, the bar association will have the referral number of most, if not all, licensed attorneys in your state. They will be able to give you the top three law practitioners who will be able to handle your case the best, so give the bar association a call.
If the Denver attorney you are considering offers a free consultation, use the time as a sort of interview for the lawyer. You want to ask him any questions you may have about his practice, his statistics, how he handles the cases, etc. This is your time to decide whether or not he will work for what you need.
Finding a Denver attorney who is skilled at his job, who knows the law, and who has a good, dependable reputation may be a process, but in the end when it comes down to your case you will be glad you did.
Preparing for the big day: Going to Trial
Posted by bulldzr in Denver Attorney, Denver Attorney Finder, Firing your Attorney, Firing your Lawyer on June 18th, 2009
If your Colorado personal injury case must go to trial, it becomes very important to prepare properly and to have a good personal injury lawyer. For most clients, especially those who have never been to court before, the weeks leading up to the trial date can be scary. During this time, your attorney will be making final preparations for the trial. This includes things such as sending subpoenas
to witnesses, preparing exhibits, preparing trial notes such as opening statements and closing arguments and questions to ask the witnesses.
In addition, your attorney will probably want to begin preparing you for your testimony. Some of the things that your attorney might have you do, is to read your deposition transcript and also perhaps the deposition transcripts of the defendant and other witnesses. He or she might also practice your testimony with you. As part of that practice, he or she may ask you difficult questions that other attorneys might ask you during cross examination so that you will be more prepared.
Another important issue, which is often overlooked, is what to wear to trial. Do not dress too formally or flashy- but do not dress too casually either. Try to find a happy medium between the tuxedo and the tuxedo t-shirt. Do not alienate the jury be looking too flashy. On the other hand, nobody likes a slob.
Personal Injury cases are just like any other, and require great preparation by both the lawyer and the client. Personal injury lawyers know the system, and they know how best to prepare for trial in order to win and receive compensation for your injury. Research personal injury law in Colorado and attorneys who will best serve your needs. Check out the web for more information on personal injury attorneys in Denver and the surrounding areas. So you’ve been injured… What now?
Posted by bulldzr in Denver Attorney, Denver Attorney Finder, Hiring A Lawyer, Uncategorized, personal injury attorney on June 18th, 2009
Everyday, thousands of Colorado residents fall victim to different forms of personal injury. Whether it’s a car accident, or simply someone slipping and falling on the job, people often need legal representation. Finding a Colorado personal injury lawyer and filing lawsuits can be an intimidating process, so here are practical legal answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from victims.
1. “What types of injuries do I need a personal injury lawyer for?” — Depending on the circumstances, one can seek legal representation for injuries ranging from car accidents, work accidents, dog bites, food poisoning and medical malpractice to injuries resulting from negligence, inadequate security, or even defective products. There have even been cases based on the intentional infliction of emotional distress. If you are injured, whatever the circumstances, its better to seek the counsel of a personal injury lawyer to see if you can be compensated for your accident.
2. “How Do I choose the right Attorney for me?”
– The most comfortable way to select an attorney is through personal referrals through friends or coworkers. However, that is not the best way to select your legal representation in Colorado. There are many attorney search resources out there. Besides the obvious method of seeking out advertisements, you can look through online directories, and also attorney finder websites. The good thing about online directories and search sites is that there are reviews from actual clientele.
3.” How much will this cost me? Are the fees hourly?
– Fees for personal injury lawyers vary depending on the attorney. Most personal injury attorneys do not charge an hourly fee for their time. Normally, an attorney in a personal injury case will charge the client a percentage of the settlement that is attained, if any, at the end of the case. This is called a “contingency fee” because it is contingent upon the ultimate outcome of the case. There is no fee unless you win your case.
4. “I’m on a limited budget, where can I find a cheap lawyer without sacrificing quality?
– The best way to compare attorneys of all different specialties, regions, and costs is to use the Internet. Use a search engine, local directory, or even better, a Denver attorney finder site. This way, you can find a lawyer in the Denver Metro area, with the right expertise, and the right fees to meet your personal injury law needs.
If you have been injured, and think that you might be entitled to some compensation, visit the web for Denver attorney info. There is great information on all different aspects of law in Denver including personal injury law. When looking for a personal injury lawyer in Colorado, visit Colorado attorney Finder. Hopefully, these answers and resources will be helpful in meeting your Colorado legal needs.

Reasons to hire a DUI Attorney
Posted by hawkeye11 in DUI Lawyer Denver, Denver Attorney, Denver DUI attorney, Hiring A Lawyer, hiring a dui lawyer on June 12th, 2009
by Chris Miller
Besides a familiarity with case law a DUI Attorney brings extensive trial experience to your side of the proceedings.
Refusing to consider hiring an experienced DUI Attorney because of the cost can be a costly mistake. Accepting the court appointed lawyer who may not have much experience with DUI case law will not result in the lowest fines or jail time. And in most cases you will still be required to pay the court appointed lawyers fees.
A competent DUI Attorney will know what facts to bring out in the testimony of witness or law enforcement officers and when to challenge that testimony. They will know what evidence may be available to help you win your case and file the necessary motions. They will be able to work with witnesses testifying on your behalf and to judge the value of each. An experienced DUI Attorney will also have access to expert witnesses to refute the accuracy of blood or urine test results.
Many experienced DUI Attorneys are familiar with the lack of reliability of most field sobriety tests and know the best ways to present this evidence in court. They will also be knowledgeable on the various breathalyzers in use and their accuracy. Breathalyzers also require legal certification and maintenance records, your Attorney will know where to find that information and how to use it in court.
Also facts such as whether or not you handled certain types of chemicals or took over the counter cold medicine prior to your arrest can have an effect on the breathalyzer results.
Even if you do not want to go to trial a DUI Attorney will help in bringing about a speedy end to the situation and the least amount of fines or jail time possible.
The best reason to hire an experienced DUI Attorney is so that you wont have any regrets afterwards. Many people walk out of the court room afterwards saying they should have hired a lawyer to protect their rights.
Don’t make that mistake.

Everyone thinks at some point in time in their life they are invincible. I believe everyone thinks if they have a few drinks they will make it home without getting pulled over and arrested. The thought of getting into an accident doesn’t come to mind, the thought of hitting an innocent pedestrian doesn’t come to mind and certainly harming yourself doesn’t come to mind. Heck, you’re a great driver, you are not even drunk and you certainly know how to get home. We’ve all been there and unfortunately some unlucky individuals have been in an accident or arrested for a DUI.
If you are one of these unlucky drivers who have made the wrong choice to drive intoxicated or maybe you were wrongly accused of driving under the influence the first thing you need to do is contact a DUI Attorney in your area. In Denver, there are a ton of attorneys who handle these traffic cases but you want to make sure you find a Denver DUI attorney specialist. You want to have someone who handles traffic cases daily to ensure you get the best legal representation.
Sure you have the right to represent yourself in the court of law and that might be ok in small claims court but something with as high of punishment as a DUI or DWI it is not worth the risk. The amount of money, time and even criminal charges a DUI attorney will save you is worth the legal fees they will be collecting from you.
Here are a few things a DUI Attorney can do for you:
Save you time and an appearance in court: Once you find the right attorney, they will immediately save you time by handling the scheduling of your court appearances and legal documentation. Another nice thing about having an attorney represent you in court is you will not be required to attend your first court hearing. Your attorney will represent you in the court room and give your plea.
Help reduce your sentence, fine, or points on your license: The DUI attorney you hire can present mitigating factors to the District Attorney to help you obtain a favorable plea bargain. This could mean showing a lack of previous criminal history, doing public service, or even starting on alcohol or drug treatment before the Court requires it. You could have your sentence or fines reduced as well as keeping your license or reduce the points against you on your license saving you a ton of money on your car insurance.
They also will formulate sentencing programs tailored to a client’s specific needs, often helping defendants avoid future brushes with the criminal justice system. This is very beneficial for the rest of your life when trying to get a desired job.
Save you from feelings of Fear, Embarrassment, or Anxiety: Criminal charges often times bring feelings of fear or embarrassment and with an attorney on your side they will help reduce these feelings. You will not have to speak in court or represent yourself which often times more than not bring on anxiety to individuals in the court room. You can be calm and relieved knowing you are in good hands with your DUI attorney. Your attorney will always look out for your best interest.
It is important to remember each traffic case is different and unique. Only an experienced and specialized attorney can assess the case and give you a fair deal out of it. They can negotiate for you the best deals with prosecutors (the state) and often reduce the charges and penalties to benefit of the pleader. They also help you to cope with fear, embarrassment and reduced self-esteem.
Remember that DUI is a mark that remains with you throughout your life. The DUI lawyer will be familiar with all important legal rules, especially with the local court customs. The DUI attorney will help you to figure out whether you even actually have a case to fight.
Finding a Denver Criminal Defense Attorney
Posted by bulldzr in Criminal Attorney, DUI defense Attorney, Denver Attorney, Denver DUI attorney, Englewood DUI Lawyer, criminal defense attorney denver on May 5th, 2009

By: Cade Lee
It never ceases to amaze me how many criminal cases in Denver go to a plea bargain without an attorney. In the end usually I hear from a defendant just how unhappy they are with the process and the disposition of the case. Of course hiring an attorney was not an option because of the cost associated with hiring an attorney or lawyer, and usually I hear about their previous experience which wasn’t a positive one. I think we have all hired an attorney or legal professional that just didn’t seem to give the services they charged for, and that is exactly why I am writing this post. Solid legal counsel is going to cost money; there is no way around that. Having excellent representation is worth more than handling negotiations with a District Attorney yourself; I have seen this first hand, over and over again. So with that being said, how do you locate that Denver attorney or Denver lawyer that is going to both fit your budget and give you the representation that you deserve?
First, start off with the consultation. It seems to me that most people will attend one consultation and then either hire that lawyer or not hire a lawyer at all. What I have found is that attending three or maybe even four consultations is the best way to make a decision as to whether or not you will need an attorney. I have never recommended that someone not hire an attorney, but there are those rare cases where just handling the case yourself probably makes better sense. For example a simple traffic violation versus a criminal charge like domestic violence, in the case of the traffic violation, this might be a case where I would negotiate with the Denver District Attorney myself. I know you are saying, “All this goes without saying, doesn’t it?” Yes it does, but I want to make certain that I am clear.
For serious charges, it is rare that a defendant does not benefit from consulting with a Denver Criminal Defense Attorney. Your Denver Criminal Defense Lawyer should be able to identify important pretrial issues and explain it to you in a way that you are never out of the loop. If you feel that your attorney is proceeding without explaining the entire process to you, then it is probably time for you to find a different attorney or stop the process and make certain you are completely informed. This is why the consultation process was so important to begin with. It is never okay for you to just go with an attorney because you feel like they know what they are doing; make absolute certain that you know their experience is going to be a benefit to you. Seems to make sense while you read this, but how many times have you allowed an attorney in Denver to file a motion on your behalf without reading the motion? When you read the motion did you understand it? If you did not understand the motion, did you tell the attorney to go ahead with the motion? Make sure you ask the simple questions and understand the ramifications of your case entirely, this will prevent future disappointment. It seems that whenever I hear a defendant complaining about their attorney or lawyer, they explain that the attorney never explained the sentence to them all the way or, “I never agreed to serve four years probation but that is what I received.” Had they taken the time to understand their case and just throw it in the hands of their attorney they probably would have known about their sentence and they would not be surprised with the outcome.
Be wary of entering into a retainer agreement which calls for additional payments if the case will go to trial, make certain that you nail the fees down in the beginning. I have had many experiences where attorneys have gone crazy with the retainer and it was spent in a matter of weeks. I am not suggesting that you constantly negotiate with your attorney about their fees; a good attorney is going to be expensive. I am suggesting that you not pay more than you have to. Find out what the retainer is going to cover and if that retainer is expected to take your case through trial. It is not unusual for appellate lawyers to hear clients recite that they entered into guilty pleas after they were unable to come up with necessary funds to pay their lawyers to proceed with a trial. It is your responsibility to find out how much your case is going to cost. I can already hear your attorney giving you the most common, “Well, it really depends on whether or not we go to trial, if we go to trial would there be an appeal?” When I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the attorney I move on to the next, it is not unreasonable to hear an estimate of what it will cost. Of course a good attorney will inform you that they are uncertain because they do not want to be held accountable should your case cost more than originally anticipated which is completely reasonable. All we are looking for here is an estimate so that we can be prepared to go to trial if we need to.
In my experience, finding a good criminal defense lawyer in Denver can be difficult, here are some suggestions of resources I have found useful:
-
Referrals – If you were arrested and incarcerated, then obviously what better crowd to ask for referrals. It seems inmates always know which criminal defense attorneys are
worthwhile and which are not. This is not the absolute best source for referrals, but I do find more value here than asking an attorney for a referral. I don’t want to be referred to an attorney just because they played golf with the attorney I asked for the referral from. However, if you do already work with an attorney or lawyer in Denverthat you trust, than this would absolutely be an excellent place to start for a solid referral.
- Courtroom Observation – Before you discount this one, stop and think. Doesn’t it make sense that you would watch an attorney in the courtroom and see how they handle themselves? I have found an excellent attorney by just going to court and watching several cases.
- Directories – There are several competent law directories with excellent attorneys for all different sectors of law practice. If you are going to utilize a directory to locate your attorney then it is imperative that you interview a couple of different attorneys so that you are making an informed decision. Seems to make sense right? Again, I have heard over and over again, “We went with the first attorney we met with, he/she seemed capable”. Don’t get lazy, talk with a couple of different attorneys and make certain that you are happy with your decision don’t get lazy, talk with a couple of different attorneys and make certain that you are happy with your decision. No matter what happens you will need to deal with the consequences of the case.
This is not the end all guide to hiring your Denver attorney, but a summary of some important things to consider when hiring an attorney. No matter what it is important to try and be as objective as you can and not get swallowed up with the emotions that are usually tied to a criminal case. Good advice, but usually difficult to follow. This article should not be considered legal advice and is simply a resource for those navigating their way through the many Denver Attorneys that are available.
Choosing A Denver Attorney
Posted by hawkeye11 in Denver Attorney, Hiring A Lawyer on April 27th, 2009
At times people need legal help. Most of us are not trained legal professionals and may have little real knowledge of the law; this is when you will need a good Denver attorney the most. Finding the right lawyer may feel like a daunting task, by taking chances you may not realize the trouble you are in for until it is too late. While it may take some time to find the right Denver lawyer, it is time worth spending.
Most lawyers are able to decipher if another attorney is sensible and competent, or on the other hand not as honest as they are eager to please. Unfortunately, becoming a Denver lawyer yourself is not the way most people go about selecting the right lawyer. There are, however, a number of things you can watch for to tell if the attorney you are chatting with will be able to help solve whatever problem you may have, or whether you should run away as fast as humanly possible. Here are some things to look for:
1) Professionalism is extremely important when selecting someone to hire. Regardless of the trade or profession, you usually know when you meet true professionals. They are completely at ease in their environment; they act in a way that seems natural and appropriate; and they exude a quiet confidence. Lawyers are the same and you should look for just that.
2) Besides being professional, be sure to pick a lawyer with experience in the field for which you need help and always check his or her credentials. Some states have specialty certification programs; others do not. But unless your problem is routine paper-processing, an attorney who lacks experience in the field will have a poor feel for the nuances and subtleties of a problem, and may cause avoidable complications while trying to resolve things to your satisfaction. If your attorney is not forth coming with their credentials in conversation you should always check into it.
3) Attorney-client privilege is the practice of keeping information provided to your attorney between yourself and your attorney confidential in any and all circumstances. When selecting a lawyer a key quality is trust and knowing that your attorney will not reveal anything about the legal affairs of your case. That does not prevent them from telling you about other cases they have worked on, or about their professional background. Remember, though, that the law school they attended is usually less important than the kind of work they have done since. It says nothing about their professional ethics, and is no guarantee that they have an ounce of common sense.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to guarantee after selecting your attorney that you will automatically win your case or that Denver attorney is the right one for you. The decision often depends on many factors that vary from person to person, and case to case. The decision to hire a lawyer is intensely personal since, you are about to trust that attorney with your legal affairs. You should always devote an adequate amount of time to selecting the right attorney.
